Forgings for cost benefits

We at SSM Forge provide properly designed forgings that are more cost-effective than metal parts produced by alternative methods such as : castings, machined bar and plate, weldments, stampings, built up structures, sheet metal and other fabricated assemblies

Time is Money : Our Quicker production and shorter delivery schedule saves time , due to the high volume production run cycle, makes our forgings more cost effective and highly reliable when put ‘in service’ as compared to the casting counterpart , with reduced rejection rates, thus, saving precious time and material wastage , especially when the clock is ticking.

Although, the forged parts initially cost more than competitive metal products, a look at life-cycle costs often justifies the use of forgings manufactured by SSM Forge.

Mindfully selected specific process refinements also contribute to cost competitiveness by way of material conservation. A careful control of billet weight and shape can eliminate excessive flash and result in material savings of up to 40% in forged-steel automotive parts or more, depending on the product design.

SSM Forgings yield advantages in machining, lead time and tool life. Forgings, especially net shapes and near-net shapes, make better use of material , generate little scrap and minimize machining.

Higher strength-to-weight ratios often make forgings competitive with castings; not only because of their lighter weight, but also because forgings outperform castings. For example: consider a connecting rod for automobile, it will be 10% lighter and stronger than its casting version.

When you choose us for switching from multipart weldments to forgings, we at SSM Forge , promise cost reduction by eliminating labor-intensive welding between adjacent components , setup operations and material expenditure. Cost saving is achieved when forgings replace complex fabrications and assemblies.

SSM Forge manufactured forgings do not require periodic inspections like welded parts do. This benefit is particularly important when welds are encased in concrete or otherwise difficult, areas to inspect. Reduced quality control testing can also contribute to cost savings because forgings readily lend themselves to quality control sampling plans, while 100% of critical castings need to be tested.

Our experienced team of engineers at SSM Forge provide solutions in less expensive, easier-to-process materials options like micro alloyed steels deliver great economies in forged components such as automotive transmission and engine parts. Conserving energy by eliminating heat treatment, switching from quenched and tempered alloy steels to air-cooled micro alloyed grades, saves as much as 15% on connecting rods, crankshafts, gears, steering arms, and wheel hubs.

SSM Forge manufactured forgings require fewer secondary operations. As supplied, some grades of bar and plate require additional operations such as turning, grinding and polishing to remove surface irregularities and achieve desired finish, dimensional accuracy, machine-ability and strength. Often, forgings can be put into service without expensive secondary operations.
